Volkswagen Beetle in India: A Look Back at its 2010 Introduction
By the Bharat Auto Insights Editorial Team · Last reviewed 17 October 2026
Volkswagen offered the New Beetle in India from around 2009 as a fully imported lifestyle car, priced well above mainstream models. It appealed for its iconic design rather than practicality, and remained a niche product.
Positioning
Brought in as a completely built unit, the Beetle attracted high import duties, placing it in premium territory. Volkswagen used it partly as an image-builder while expanding its locally assembled range.
Appeal and limits
Buyers loved its distinctive shape and colours. Limited rear-seat space, a small boot and a high price kept it a second or third car for most owners.
Legacy
A later-generation Beetle was also sold in India, and Volkswagen ended Beetle production worldwide in 2019.
