Decoding Car Safety Ratings in India: Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP Explained

By the Bharat Auto Insights Editorial Team · Last reviewed 17 October 2026

Crash-test star ratings tell you how well a car protects adults and children in standardised collisions. In India, look for ratings from Bharat NCAP (the government programme) or Global NCAP, check both the adult and child scores, and make sure the rating applies to the variant you are buying.

Two programmes

Global NCAP

An independent programme that has tested many Indian-made cars under its 'Safer Cars for India' initiative, rating adult and child occupant protection separately.

Bharat NCAP

India's own assessment programme, introduced in 2023, with tests aligned to international protocols and star ratings for adult and child occupants.

How to read a rating

  • Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP) are scored separately — check both.
  • A rating applies to the tested specification; base variants with fewer airbags may differ.
  • Test protocols have become stricter over time, so older ratings are not directly comparable to newer ones.
  • Body-shell stability noted in the report matters as much as the star count.

Features that help

  • Six airbags
  • Electronic stability control (ESC)
  • ISOFIX child-seat anchors
  • Three-point seatbelts for every seat
  • Seatbelt reminders for all rows

Using ratings when buying

Shortlist on safety first, then on features. Always verify the current rating on the programme's official website rather than relying on advertising.
