Car loans in India are offered by banks, non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) and manufacturer-tied finance arms. The best loan is the one with the lowest total cost — interest rate, processing fees and prepayment charges together — not just the lowest EMI. Compare at least three written offers.
Where to borrow
| Lender | Typical strengths | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Public and private banks | Competitive rates for good credit | Documentation and approval time |
| NBFCs | Flexible eligibility, quick approval | Rates are often higher |
| Dealer / manufacturer finance | Convenience, occasional offers | Compare against your own bank's offer |
Key terms to compare
- Interest rate type: fixed or floating.
- Tenure: longer tenure lowers EMI but increases total interest.
- Down payment: a larger down payment reduces interest paid.
- Processing and documentation fees.
- Foreclosure and part-prepayment charges.
Improve your offer
- Check your credit score beforehand
- Get pre-approval from your own bank
- Negotiate the vehicle price separately from finance
- Read the sanction letter before signing
