How to Choose the Right Car Insurance in India
By the Bharat Auto Insights Editorial Team · Last reviewed 17 October 2026
Choose comprehensive cover for any car worth protecting, set the IDV close to market value, add only the add-ons that fit your car's age and use, and protect your No Claim Bonus. Renew before expiry to avoid inspection and lost benefits.
Step 1: Pick the policy type
Third-party only meets the legal minimum. Comprehensive cover is the sensible choice for most cars under about ten years old.
Step 2: Set the right IDV
A low IDV reduces the premium but also reduces what you receive if the car is stolen or written off. Keep it close to the car's market value.
Step 3: Choose add-ons wisely
- Zero depreciation: valuable for the first few years.
- Engine protection: useful in flood-prone cities.
- Return to invoice: for new cars, covers the gap to on-road price after total loss.
- Roadside assistance: helpful for frequent highway drivers.
Step 4: Protect your NCB
The No Claim Bonus can significantly reduce your own-damage premium over claim-free years. For small repairs, paying yourself can be cheaper than losing the NCB. An NCB protector add-on is available from many insurers.
Step 5: Renew on time
Renew before the policy lapses. A lapse can mean a vehicle inspection and the loss of your NCB if it continues beyond the insurer's grace period.
