Your Complete Guide to Buying Your First Motorcycle in India
By the Bharat Auto Insights Editorial Team · Last reviewed 17 October 2026
For a first motorcycle in India, choose a lightweight 100–160cc bike you can flat-foot comfortably, budget for on-road costs plus safety gear, and get your learner's licence before you start practising. Bigger bikes can wait until you have a season of riding experience.
1. Licence first
You need a learner's licence to practise on public roads, followed by a permanent driving licence for motorcycles with gear (MCWG) after the waiting period and a driving test at your RTO. Application is available through the Parivahan Sarathi portal.
2. Choose the right size
- Seat height: you should be able to place both feet on the ground.
- Weight: a lighter bike is easier to handle in traffic and when parking.
- Engine: 100–125cc for commuting, 150–160cc for more highway use.
3. Budget the full cost
- Ex-showroom price
- RTO registration and road tax
- Insurance (third-party is mandatory)
- Helmet, gloves and jacket
- Optional accessories and extended warranty
4. Test ride and inspect
Ride at least two or three shortlisted bikes. Check braking feel, clutch effort, mirror visibility and comfort over speed breakers.
5. After purchase
Follow the first-service schedule, ride gently during the running-in period, and keep your documents — RC, insurance and PUC — easily available.
