Chevrolet Spark vs Tata Nano: A 2010 Small-Car Comparison Revisited
By the Bharat Auto Insights Editorial Team · Last reviewed 17 October 2026
In 2010 the Tata Nano and Chevrolet Spark represented two approaches to the budget car. The Nano was a radically low-cost, rear-engined car with a 624cc twin-cylinder engine; the Spark was a conventional small hatchback with a 1.0-litre four-cylinder engine at a higher price.
How they compared
| Tata Nano | Chevrolet Spark | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Rear engine, rear-wheel drive | Front engine, front-wheel drive |
| Engine | 624cc two-cylinder petrol | Around 1.0-litre four-cylinder petrol |
| Strength | Very low price, tiny footprint | More conventional, better highway ability |
What happened next
The Nano's sales fell short of expectations and production ended in 2018. General Motors stopped selling cars in India in 2017. Both stories show how Indian buyers value aspiration and safety as well as price.
