A Beginner's Guide to Electric Car Ownership in India
By the Bharat Auto Insights Editorial Team · Last reviewed 17 October 2026
Day to day, owning an electric car in India is simple: plug in at home most nights, drive with the AC on without worrying about fuel prices, and spend less on routine servicing. The main adjustments are planning long trips around chargers and understanding how range changes with conditions.
A typical week
Most owners charge two or three times a week at home, depending on daily distance. You will rarely need public chargers in the city if you have home charging.
Making the most of range
- Drive smoothly and use regenerative braking
- Pre-cool the cabin while plugged in
- Keep tyres at the correct pressure
- Higher highway speeds reduce range noticeably
Servicing and costs
EVs have no engine oil, spark plugs or clutch, so routine servicing is simpler. Tyres, brakes, suspension, cabin filters and coolant for the battery system still need attention.
Battery care
- For daily use, many manufacturers suggest charging to around 80–90%
- Avoid frequently running the battery to near zero
- Limit repeated fast charging where home charging is available
- Park in shade during extreme heat when possible
Insurance and resale
Insure for the full value and check whether battery damage is covered under your policy. Resale values for EVs are still settling in India; a strong battery warranty helps.
