Essential Maintenance Tips for Your Two-Wheeler
By the Bharat Auto Insights Editorial Team · Last reviewed 17 October 2026
Most two-wheeler problems can be prevented with a few habits: check tyre pressure weekly, clean and lubricate the chain regularly, change engine oil on schedule, and keep brakes and the battery in good order. Follow the service intervals in your owner's manual.
Weekly checks
- Tyre pressure (cold) and tread condition
- Brake operation and lever play
- Lights, horn and indicators
- Chain tension and lubrication
Engine oil
Use the grade specified in your manual and change it at the recommended interval — sooner in dusty or heavy-traffic conditions. Check the level on the sight glass or dipstick monthly.
Chain care
Clean the chain with a suitable cleaner and lubricate it every few hundred kilometres, and after riding in rain. A loose or dry chain wastes fuel and wears sprockets faster.
Monsoon precautions
- Avoid riding through deep water
- Lubricate the chain after wet rides
- Check brakes after riding through water
- Park under cover to protect electricals
Storage
If parking for weeks, keep the tank full to prevent rust, disconnect or trickle-charge the battery, and keep tyres inflated.
