Step-by-Step Guide to Selling Your Used Car in India
By the Bharat Auto Insights Editorial Team · Last reviewed 17 October 2026
To sell a used car in India: get a fair valuation, gather your documents, decide between a private sale, dealer or online buyer, then complete the RC transfer with Forms 29 and 30. Do not hand over the car until payment has cleared and transfer forms are signed.
Step 1: Value your car
Compare quotes from at least three sources — online valuation tools, a dealer exchange offer and listings of similar cars in your city. Condition, ownership count and service history matter more than small extras.
Step 2: Prepare the car
- Complete any due service and keep the bill.
- Fix small, inexpensive defects.
- Get a professional clean.
- Make sure the PUC certificate and insurance are valid.
Step 3: Gather documents
- Original RC
- Insurance policy
- PUC certificate
- Service records
- Loan closure letter and NOC if the car was financed
- Forms 29 and 30
- ID and address proof
Step 4: Complete the sale safely
- Accept payment by bank transfer or demand draft and confirm it has cleared.
- Write a simple delivery note with date, time and odometer reading, signed by both parties.
- Make sure the RC transfer is filed with the RTO so future challans are not linked to you.
- Transfer or cancel your insurance and claim your No Claim Bonus for your next car.
