In every major Indian city you can buy a used car from three kinds of seller: manufacturer-backed certified pre-owned outlets, organised online platforms with inspection and warranty, and independent local dealers. Certified and organised sellers usually cost a little more but reduce risk.
Types of seller
| Seller | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer-certified outlets | Multi-point inspection, warranty, documentation handled | Higher prices, mostly own-brand cars |
| Organised online platforms | Wide choice, home test drives, return windows | Policies vary; read the fine print |
| Independent local dealers | Negotiable prices, wide variety | Quality varies; inspection essential |
| Private sellers | Often lowest price | No warranty, you handle all paperwork |
Tips by city
In Delhi NCR, check the age limits that apply to diesel and petrol vehicles before buying older cars. In coastal cities such as Mumbai and Chennai, inspect carefully for rust and flood damage. In Bengaluru and Pune, check for clutch and brake wear from stop-start traffic.
Questions to ask any dealer
- Is there a written warranty, and what does it cover?
- Will you handle the RC transfer, and how long will it take?
- Can I take the car for an independent inspection?
- Are there any pending challans or loans?
A note on referrals
We do not currently recommend specific dealerships. If we add partner links in future, they will be clearly labelled as affiliate or sponsored.
